There’s a lot of questions around measuring efforts in social media marketing, some say it can be done, some say it cant’ (that it’s a lot like Public Relations).  To a degree both views are correct, but regardless of that, you still need to set goals for your strategy.  If you don’t how else will you know if your strategy is effectively working and giving you successful results.  How do you know when to put more resources behind your tactics and kick them up, or how do you know when to stop something that isn’t working as you thought it would?

Today’s Chapter – Chapter 3 – Goals Need to be Define in the book Social Media Marketing, Engaging Strategies for Facebook, Twitter & Other Social Media takes a high level view of the chapter and points out three insights – part of the 45 Social Media Insights Over 45 Days series.  The chapter itself goes into a lot more detail about setting goals for your social media strategy, however the three high level tips for today’s video are:

  1. Direct Clicks to Purchase a Product or Order a Service is Very Rare in Social Media
  2. There Are Different Types of Social Media So You Need To Define Different Goals
  3. Your Goals Can Change

Take a few minutes and learn about setting goals for your social media strategy.

Chapter 3: Goals Need to Be Defined – Video Transcript

Hi I’m Li Evans and I’m author of Social Media Marketing, Engaging Strategies for Facebook, Twitter & Other Social Media.  I’m back with 45 Social Media Insights Over 45 Days which is a series of videos that highlights what’s going on in the book with three high level tips about the chapter in 1 to 2 minute segment.  You can find this video and other chapter videos at the site SMMarektingBook.com.  so lets get to it, we’re going to go into Chapter 3 which is Goals Need to Be Defined.  A lot of people think that you can’t measure social media, and that you can’t really go after anything specific in social media, that’s not necessarily true.  These three tips will help you.

The first one is that you have to realize  is that “Direct Clicks to Purchase a Product or Order a Service is Very Rare in Social Media“.  It really doesn’t happen that way.  It’s about more in social media, its about sharing an experience and its about the audience or the customer sharing that experience.  They aren’t necessarily coming to buy your product in social media, they’re coming to share their experience and tell you why they love you or why they hate you. So direct clicks to are very rare. What does happen though is other people will see these conversations and will come around and buy your product or order your service, so keep that in mind.

Tip number two is that “There Are Different Types of Social Media So You Need To Define Different Goals“.  Sometimes social media sites could be social news sites, so with those social news sites you might be getting more traffic coming to your site  so is that a goal to help you lift your brand awareness?  Then there’s things like reviews, do those help you get more products sold?  These are different goals for different types of social media sites that you really have to take a look at.

The last tip I have for you is that “Your Goals Can Change“.  Depending on what kind of social media you are getting involved with, if the social media plan that you put into place and that you implemented is working or not, if its not you might need to change your goal.  You might need to look and see that hey maybe this isn’t working as we thought it would.

So those are your three tips for Chapter 3, which is Goals Need to Be Defined, in the book Social Media Marketing, Engaging Strategies for Facebook, Twitter & Other Social Media.  You can find this video and many other videos at SMMarketingBook.com.  I’m Li Evans and I’ll be back with another chapter video tomorrow.
