The world of social media is pretty big and there’s a lot of different types of sites out there that fall under the broad term of social media.  In chapter 2 of the book, Social Media Marketing:  Strategies for Engaging in Facebook, Twitter & Other Social Media, I go into specific detail about the different types of social media that are out there and how they appeal to different types of community users.

Understanding your audience is half the battle to securing a successful online social media marketing strategy.  Another piece of that puzzle is understanding the types of social media out there and how they appeal to different demographics, different ethnographics, as well as different profile within social media.  Today I highlight three different types for this video in the 45 Social Media Insights Over 45 Days series.  Again, remember, these are just three of many that are written about in depth in the book.

Chapter 2:  Understanding the Different Types of Social Media Video Transcript

Hi I’m Li Evans and I’m author of Social Media Marketing:  Strategies for Engaging in Facebook, Twitter & Other Social Media.   I have a series called 45 Social Media Insights Over 45 Days which highlights a series of chapters from the book with three high level tips that you can decide whether you want to buy the book or not.   Those videos can be found at SMMarketingBook.com.  So with that lets take a look at chapter 2, Which is “Understanding the Social Media Types“.  I’ve got three high level tips for you, and those three tips today are about three different types of social media.   Now there are a lot of other types of social media and those are discussed in depth in the chapter.  And again these are just three high level tips about these three types of social media.

So the first tip, which is the first type of social media is “Social News“.  Social News is basically social sites where people can submit different types of magazine articles that are online, or news articles or blog posts.  Even pictures, or videos or even sometimes audio.  It’s where in these sites people can vote whether they like these articles or not.  The most famous social news site out there is Digg.  If someone puts your article out on Digg and it gets popular its called “being dugg”.  That means you got to the front page of Digg’s site and it can bring in a lot of traffic, really fast.  Now the point is about discussing these social news sites is that it can be considered junk traffic because if you are a product or a service that you are trying to sell and you have a page of your site that hits Digg it could bring down your site if you are not ready for it, and this traffic is very short lived.  If you are a content site this kind of traffic is great for you.  So take social news sites and take them with a grain of salt or plan for them very carefully.

Tip number two is “Social Bookmarking“.  Its very similar to social news but what people like to really do with these sites is that they bookmark them.  What that means is that it’s just like your browser where you want to bookmark a particular page and keep it for later to go back to, but you are sharing these bookmarks with other people in the community.  The most famous or the most popular type of social bookmarking service that there is out there is Delicious.

The third and final tip?  The third and final type of social media that we’re going to talk about today is “Social Sharing” (laugh) I can’t say that really fast, either.  So, social sharing is basically site like YouTube and Flickr where where you are sharing things like videos and photos with the community.  Those people can vote on them up or vote on them down. They can comment on them, they can embed them into different other types of sites  such as blogs or on static web sites and its a way for people to share their experiences about  products or services or topics that they are really, really in love with and passionate about.
